UCL Hackathon: Meganexus’ Continued Support of AI for Social Good

Overview

The University College London (UCL) AI Hackathon is an annual event where students develop AI-driven solutions addressing real-world challenges. This aligns with Meganexus’ vision of applying AI securely and ethically to support complex decision-making and improve lives. By mentoring students and partnering with UCL and The Digital Greenhouse, Meganexus helps nurture the next generation of innovators focused on positive social and environmental impact.

2024 Hackathon

Meganexus’ first direct involvement with the UCL AI Hackathon was in July 2024, following a request from UCL earlier that year. Prior to this, we collaborated with UCL and The Digital Greenhouse on a series of workshops aimed at educating students in the Bailiwick on AI fundamentals and applications.

The 2024 Hackathon challenged students to design AI-powered applications to connect young people with local volunteering opportunities. Throughout the event, Meganexus played a key mentoring role—guiding teams on how to transform ideas into practical solutions, addressing technical and ethical considerations, and fostering collaboration within teams. This involvement reflected Meganexus’ commitment to empowering youth with AI skills that have a real social impact.

2025 Hackathon

The 2025 challenge focused on building a plan for an AI model to predict and reduce energy consumption in school buildings and homes. As part of the Digital Innovators Programme, sponsored by 1st Central and run by The Digital Greenhouse, Meganexus guided students from Blanchelande College, Elizabeth College, and The Sixth Form Centre (Years 10-12). Paulius Volskis from Meganexus also served on the judging panel, helping select Team Octowatt as the winning team.

Summary

Meganexus is deeply committed to advancing ethical AI innovation that benefits society and the environment. Our ongoing involvement with the UCL AI Hackathon showcases our dedication to mentoring future leaders in AI, supporting initiatives that combine technical excellence with social responsibility. By partnering with organisations like UCL and The Digital Greenhouse, we continue to invest in education and community programmes that inspire young people to use AI thoughtfully and effectively, addressing pressing global challenges through creativity and collaboration.
